Discussion: Dream YA Fantasy Author Panel

January 24, 2017 Discussion 5

Who is your favourite author? Is there a particular author you’d love to meet in person?

I’ve been to a number of writer’s festivals and conventions over the last few years, and I love meeting authors and hearing them speak about their stories and wiring processes. I especially love to hear about their inspirations and favourite books – there’s a good chance that I’ll also love it!

The team at Eventbrite, the site for event ticketing and organisation, invited me to speculate on who I should like to see on a panel together at a convention or festival. They even said I could choose anyone, alive or dead!

I’ve stuck with living authors for my panel, and I’ve chosen four of my favourite YA fantasy and sci-fi authors. They all tell a great story, and I have a feeling they’d give a brilliant panel chat between them!

Perhaps I’d title this panel something like “Mages and Dreamers“. What do you reckon?

Sarah J Maas

Okay, yes, I’ve met the author of the Throne of Glass and A Court of Thorns and Roses series (serieses?) before when she came to Australia in 2015, but she was very engaging and funny in her panels. She gave some awesome recommendations for fantasy-romance books that inspired her as well, so I’d love to pick her brain for some more great reads. Also to thank her for creating basically the best book boyfriends ever.

Also, she’d give her insight into writing fantasy fiction, of course. We couldn’t possibly get stuck in a conversation about book boyfriends. *shifty eyes*

Amie Kaufman

Amie is the co-author of the Illuminae series and the Starbound trilogy, and she also has a new series with Meagan Spooner coming out in 2018, Unearthed, as well as a book of her very own, as yet untitled. Busy lady!

I’ve seen Amie speak at festivals on a couple of occasions now, and she’s hilarious, and lovely. I’d love to hear her banter with the other dream panelists.

Maggie Stiefvater

I only discovered Maggie’s Wolves series and the Raven Cycle in 2016, but I’m so glad I did. Between her quirky writing style, her love of cars, and her gorgeous artwork, she sounds like a fascinating person and I’d love to meet her one day.

Apparently she’s working on a new book involving the Raven Boys. Anyone have any juicy info on that? Just the idea of it makes me excited!

Susan Cooper

Susan is the author of one of my favourite series of all time: The Dark is Rising Sequence. I was enchanted by this series as a kid and when I re-read it a few years ago, I was enchanted all over again. The symbology, the mythology, the Berkshire and Welsh settings, everything about it has shaped the types of books I love to read now.

As Susan is currently 81 years of age, I’m not sure we’ll be seeing her in Australia any time soon. But then, my 83-year-old Yia yia is still tripping off overseas, so you just never know!

If you’re interested in organising a ticketed event, check out Eventbrite’s Management and Planning software. Or to see events that are on in your area, head to the main Eventbrite page, then pick your country from the list at the bottom of the page. Easy!

So who would be involved in your dream panel discussion? Do tell.

Anni lives in Brisbane, Australia with her young family. She loves everything fantasy and science fiction and believes sleep is really very underrated.

Oooh, these are great selections! Doesn’t SJM give the best book recs?! I subscribe to her newsletter and I think I’ve picked up the majority of the book recommendations she puts in there and she absolutely nails it every time for finding something I’ll adore.

    Here’s my fantasy line up:
    Pierce Brown (Red Rising series)
    Sarah J. Maas (obviously)
Leigh Bardugo (Grisha and Six of Crows series)
Charlotte McConaghy (Chronicles of Kaya series)

I don’t know why I would even bother attending a ‘dream panel’ of my fave authors. I’d implode from too much happiness and miss the entire thing!

Currently on book 2 in the Raven Boys series and really liking it. If you haven’t read Stiefvater’s The Scorpio Races, you absolutely should. It is one of my all time favorite novels. A great read or audio listen, the narration is fantastic.

Oooh, excellent choices! I still need to read that Pierce Brown series. Have you met SJM before? She seems to do a lot of touring in the States, I thought you might have caught up with her already. I do actually have a copy of the scorpio races on my shelf… really must get around to that one!
And yes, I already spent a lot of the YA fest at the Brisbane Writer’s Fest last year imploding from the roomful of favourite aussie authors who were there 😀

I have not met SJM before, unfortunately. I might attempt to when she tours for ACOWAR. I’m honestly not very interested in meeting authors, especially ones I am a super huge fan of. I’m just going to say or do something super weird because I will lose control of all my socially appropriate faculties. 🙂

Marissa Meyers is kicking off the launch for Wires and Nerve in a week here at my library so I’m going to test run myself. I took the time off so that I can stay at work and enjoy the event, since hers are always so much fun. And as of this current moment, I am planning to have my book signed and say hello. We’ll see how it goes…

        • Angelya

Omg, Marissa Meyer! I love her.. and I want Wires and Nerve so badly 😀 Have an awesome time! Don’t be nervous, they’re just people too, hehe

I love her too. And I love that she lives in my town and does events at the place I work. So freaking fabulous!

It isn’t that I’m nervous about meeting favorite authors, I just legit worry that I’m going to be like “Do you mind if I just touch your face or hair for a minute? Is that weird?” or “Can you drink out of this new water bottle and then give it to me to keep forever so I have a bit of your DNA? Oh, that’s weird too? Hmmm…” hahahaha

Like my fandom love is way too high to act normal. Who knows, I don’t trust myself, haha. I just want to breathe their air for a bit.
