Top Ten Most Annoying Characters

or Top Ten book characters who we think should go die in a fire already!

1.  Joffrey Baratheon from A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin

Who is he?: Heir to Robert Baratheon, and sits on the Iron Throne from the end of the first book to {spoiler}.

Why does he deserve a fiery death?: Joffrey has an uncontrollable temper and an unchecked sadistic streak. He has little sense of right or wrong. When things go wrong, he always blames the problems on others. Despite being willful he is reckless, vicious, cruel and not very intelligent, all of which combine to make him prone to irrational and bad judgements.

We just hate him…- Philippa, Natasha and Hannah.

2. Jackal from Blood of Eden series by Julie Kagawa

Who is he?: The handsome and ruthless vampire king of Old Chicago likes his games bloody and his meals bloodier–both are supplied by the human gang of motorcycle raiders he commands.

Why is he annoying?: I’m torn between loving his sass and wanting to slap him – Angelya

Omg I love Jackal he makes the 2nd and 3rd books you crazy thing!!! – Philippa

Yes, Jackal does make the book awesome… but he’s still annoying, that’s the whole point! – Angelya

The Forever Song

3. Jace from The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare

Who is he?: One of the best Shadowhunters of his time, currently residing in the New York Institute. Raised by Valentine Morgenstern.

Why is he annoying?: Jace is such a brooding and generally grumpy character, then every now and then he clicks into Romeo mode and is all romantic! I find it weird and annoying (sorry number 1 fan Philly! 🙂 – Angelya

4. Alice from Side Effects May Vary by Julie Murphy

Who is she?: Teenage girl with cancer that miraculously goes into remission – yet she still sulks about it.

Why is she annoying?: Read my review, it is basically a rant about why and how much I hate her. – Natasha

Side effects may vary

5. Nora Grey from Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick

Who is she? (Goodreads): Nora is a student at Coldwater High School (CHS). She’s good at biology although its her worst grade and had been tutoring her best friend Vee. After the rearrangement of the seating plan in the biology lab, she is now sitting with Patch. She assumes something is not totally “right” with him and that he is even more dark and mysterious because of the lack of knowledge Patch is giving her about him and his past. Though she’s attracted to him, she struggles with it due to his secrets and the odd situations that surround him.

Why is she annoying?: For an A-grade student she is constantly doing the dumbest most stupid things – Philippa

6. Bella Swan from Twilight by Stephenie Meyer

Who is she?: In Twilight, Bella moves to her father’s home in Forks, Washington, meets the mysterious Cullen family, and falls in love with Edward Cullen. However, she soon discovers that the family is a coven of vampires.

Why is she annoying? This girl always needs rescuing! She is spineless and totally leads Jacob on. Granted she does improve in the final book – but that is because she is dead! – Natasha

7.  Cersei Lannister from A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin

Who is she (A Wiki of Ice and Fire)?: The eldest child of Tywin and Joanna Lannister by mere moments, and the twin sister of Jaime Lannister. After Robert’s Rebellion she married the new king, Robert Baratheon, and became Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. She is the mother of Joffrey, Myrcella, and Tommen of House Baratheon of King’s Landing.

Why is she annoying?: Evil and slightly unhinged!-  Angelya

8. Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter by J.K Rowling

Who is she?(Harry Potter Wiki): By order of the Ministry, she was installed as Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and then later Hogwarts High Inquisitor and Headmistress. In all three of these positions at Hogwarts she had enormous power over the students, teachers, and the curriculum, which she wielded despotically. Her time at Hogwarts was characterised by cruelty and abusive punishments against students, and because of her interfering and condescending ways, she was generally hated by most students and teachers alike.

Why is she annoying?: A fascist bureaucrat who wielded cruel and unusual punishment on certain students. Her little cough was annoying as hell!  – Natasha

9. Tris from Divergent series by Veronica Roth

Who is she? (Goodreads): She is a strong-willed sixteen-year-old girl who hates showing weakness. Though Tris was born in the faction Abnegation, she eventually transferred to Dauntless and must face the fact that she is Divergent.
When she arrives in her new faction, she opted for a change of name to go by, using Tris as a nickname for Beatrice, hoping for a fresh start in a new faction.

Why is she annoying?: Tris really really bothered me in Insurgent. I really just wanted to smack her. She is tough and whiny and I can handle that but that just wasn’t her. – Leila

10. Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte

Who is he?(Wikipedia): He is better known as a romantic hero, due to his love for Catherine Earnshaw, than for his final years of vengeance in the second half of the novel, in which he grows into a bitter, haunted man, and for a number of incidents in his early life that suggest that he was an angry and sometimes malicious individual from the beginning. His complicated, mesmerising and altogether bizarre nature makes him a rare character, with components of both the hero and villain.

Why is he annoying?: Why Heathcliff has become one of our ‘great romantic characters’ is beyond me. He is selfish, vindictive, abusive, moody and cruel. Now you can blame these character traits on his tortured and enduring love for Cathy, but really he is just a miserable sod.  –Natasha

Natasha lives in Brisbane, Australia with her husband and son. She is a self confessed bibliophile who enjoys literature and adult fiction. She also loves travelling and aims to visit 40 countries by the time she is 40 (current count 36).
