Welcome to Tea in the Treetops, and Angelya’s goals list for yet another Bout of Books Read-a-thon!
This is actually Bout of Books number 13 and while I have participated in the past on my old blog, The Oaken Bookcase, it seems I haven’t taken part since we started blogging here, which is a bit of an embarrassment, oops!
This time the read-a-thon happens to co-incide with a week of my jury duty, which involves a lot of sitting around waiting. So far it’s given me lots of reading time, so I thought, why not put it towards a total!
Here’s a bit of informaton about the read-a-thon:
The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, May 11th and runs through Sunday, May 17th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 13 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team
Goals
My main goal is to read at least 100 pages a day over the week. Nice and achievable, especially while waiting around in the court and/or traveling to work.
These are the books I’d like to read this week. I probably won’t get through them all!
- The Cracks in the Kingdom by Jaclyn Moriarty
- Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty
- Uprooted by Naomi Novik
- Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clark

Updates
Day 1: Monday 11th
Books read: The Cracks in the Kingdom by Jaclyn Moriarty
Pages read: 1 to 206
Page total: 206
Comments: I had forgotten how much I loved the quirky style of A Corner of White! It takes a bit to get your head around but once you do it’s all whimsy and quantum physics. Delightful!
Day 2: Tuesday 12th
Books read: The Cracks in the Kingdom by Jaclyn Moriarty
Pages read: 207 to 404
Page total: 404
Comments: Another day of sitting around waiting for jury duty, so plenty of time for reading. I also read when I went to bed, which I don’t usually do these days! I didn’t want to put this book down so close to the end but I couldn’t keep my eyes open so I had to! Finish it tomorrow, no probs.
Day 3: Wednesday 13th
Books read: The Cracks in the Kingdom by Jaclyn Moriarty (404 – 526 (end)), Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty (28%)
Pages read: 122 + 144 = 266
Page total: 670
Comments: Today was a work day rather than a jury day. I loved The Cracks in the Kingdom – so quirky and mind-blowing at the same time. I finished the last few pages sitting at my desk at work, because how could I leave the ending until lunchtime?! Started Big Little Lies on the train on the way home. Wow, there are some messed up school mums in this one, haha.
Day 4: Thursday 14th
Books read: Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty (28% – 49%)
Pages read: 96
Page total: 766
Comments: Thursday is my day off with the kids – lots of running around and no time to read. That said, I still managed to get 96 pages in while putting my littlest to sleep and before I went to sleep myself. This book is really very engaging, I’m having trouble putting it down and I’m finding all the little references to the day-to-day mum life to be so funny! Only trouble is, there are some very serious issues going on as well that are kind of bringing everything down as well. Ah well, onwards!
Day 5: Friday 15th
Books read: Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty (49% – end), Uprooted by Naomi Novik (8%)
Pages read: 230 +36 = 266
Page total: 1032
Comments: I had a lot of trouble putting Big Little Lies down today. I even finished it while sitting at my desk, much like Cracks in the Kingdom on Wednesday! I was just so anxious for all the characters and was desperate to find out what happened at the trivia night. Kind of pleased with how it all worked out at the end, actually.
Uprooted is interesting so far. I’m not expecting to get a whole lot of reading time over the weekend, but I’ll do my best to get at least some reading done.
Day 6: Saturday 16th
Books read: Uprooted by Naomi Novik (8% – 27%)
Pages read: 85
Page total: 1117
Comments: As expected, I didn’t get a lot of reading time during the day, but did sneak in a half hour or so while putting kids to bed. Once I started reading Uprooted I didn’t want to stop! Really enjoying it 🙂
Day 7: Sunday 17th
Books read: Uprooted by Naomi Novik (27% – 32%)
Pages read: 22
Page total: 1139
Comments: As expected, I got barely any time to read today. It’s been a very busy weekend! Today we had a family breakfast followed by a trip to see Play School in concert with my little munchkins. They loved it and so did I!
Final update: 1139 pages, 2.3 books read. Not too bad! I really enjoyed each of these books as well as the one twitter chat I managed to be part of 🙂 Also I visited quite a few new (to me) blogs! Sadly some don’t allow Name/URL commenting so I wasn’t able to leave comments.
I hope everyone had an enjoyable week, and thanks again to the Bout of Books organisers!
