Welcome to Tea in the Treetops, and Angelya’s goals list for yet another Bout of Books Read-a-thon!
Here’s a bit of information about the read-a-thon:
The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, January 4th and runs through Sunday, January 10th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 15 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team
I love a read-a-thon, and especially the Bout of Books! For some reason I didn’t have this one on my calendar and it totally caught me by surprise, but it’s perfectly timed to coincide with my holiday week so I’m hoping for a big reading week. You can see all my updates as I progress further down on this post.
These are the books I’d like to read. I’ve included more than I can probably get through – nothing wrong with stretch goals! They are all stand-alones or first in series this time.
Finish Time Lord Fairy Tales by Justin Richards Wit, Wisdom and Timey-Wimey Stuff by Cavan Scott and Mark Wright
- Who’s Afraid by Maria Lewis
- Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan
- Alistair Grim’s Odd Aquaticum by Gregory Funaro
- Shadow Study by Maria V Snyder
Day 1: Monday 4th
Books read: Doctor Who: Time Lord Fairy Tales by Justin Richards (176-261 (end)), Doctor Who: Wit, Wisdom and Timey-Wimey Stuff by Cavan Scott and Mark Wright (1-40)
Pages read: 85 + 40
Page total: 125
Comments: Okay so I was all set to read lots on my day off without the kids, and what did I do? Go visit a friend in the morning, have lunch with my mother and grandmother and go shopping most of the afternoon *facepalm* I got a bit of reading done this evening but not as much as I would have liked. Oh well, there’s still tomorrow!
Just wanted to add that I did really enjoy the Time Lord Fairy Tales. These are proper fairytale retellings with old favourites such as Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel and Red Riding Hood, but with a DW twist and the Doctor popping in now and then. Very charming!
Day 2: Tuesday 5th
Books read: Doctor Who: Wit, Wisdom and Timey-Wimey Stuff by Cavan Scott and Mark Wright(41-337 (end))
Pages read: 296
Page total: 421
Comments: Today was a beautiful and cool rainy day, so I had high hopes of curling up with a book most of the day. Unfortunately, that didn’t pan out. We have the family coming over for a birthday dinner tomorrow so had to clean, and shop, and wrap presents.
I did get to sit down and do some reading again though, and a book full of quotes is a quick way to blast through the page total. There’s a fair bit of white space there so it’s not a real page total, but makes me feel accomplished so I’m totally keeping it, lol. I enjoyed the DW quote book. In fact, I’m took notes on the classic episodes I need to go and find at my library!
Any other classic Doctor Who fans out there who can recommend a 2nd/5th/6th Doctor story to me?
Day 3: Wednesday 6th
Books read: Who’s Afraid? by Maria Lewis (first 7% – 28 pages)
Pages read: 28
Page total: 449
Comments: It was a very busy 2nd birthday for my little one (or at least it was for me), so the only reading time I got was while I was putting her to bed tonight!
Not too sure about the start of Who’s Afraid. Very info-dump-y. But I’ll give it a crack.
Day 4: Thursday 7th
Books read: None!
Pages read: 0
Page total: 449
Comments: Another busy day with the little ones = no day time reading time. It’s rare that I actually don’t read anything in a day but.. they do happen!
Day 5: Friday 8th
Books read: Who’s Afraid? by Maria Lewis (7% – 32% – 100 pages)
Pages read: 100
Page total: 549
Comments: A busy day, but I did get a chance to sit down while Evie was asleep. This book is gradually improving. Perhaps it’s the fact that it didn’t grip me right away that means that I’m not getting much reading done :-/
Day 6: Saturday 9th
Books read: Who’s Afraid? by Maria Lewis (32% – 53% – 84 pages)
Pages read: 84
Page total: 633
Comments: Okay I’m warming up to this book now. It’s sort of thumbing its nose at other werewolf and paranormal books. I like a book that doesn’t take itself too seriously!
Day 7: Sunday 10th
Books read: Who’s Afraid? by Maria Lewis (53% – end)
Pages read: 188
Page total: 821
Comments: What a way to go out with a bang! I wasn’t really planning to finish Who’s Afraid tonight but just sat down and… didn’t stop! It’s a great Aussie werewolf story set mostly in Scotland, with a sweet romance and some interesting issues explored. My review will be up soon.
Final update: 821 pages isn’t too bad for a busy holiday week! I hope everyone had a great time 🙂
