Wrap-up: July 2016

July 31, 2016 Wrap-up 6

hp8How did July disappear so quickly?! It’s been a very busy month.

It was a fairly slow reading month for me, with only nine books read, two of which were graphic novels. I am mostly attributing the lack of reading to the playing of Pokémon Go on the train. (#sorrynotsorry)

The program for the Brisbane Writers Festival was released last week and the Love YA event is going to have lots of great authors involved, including Jaclyn Moriarty, Jay Kristoff, Amie Kaufman, David Levithan and Meg Rosoff. It’s on September 10 at the Brisbane Square library. I don’t have a link for Love YA specifically yet, but the main festival program can be found here.

There weren’t many bookish events on this month, but this morning I went along to the launch of the new Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – the script book for the play that opened last night in London. The event itself wasn’t quite as hyped as I thought it might be, but it was lovely to catch up with Jeann, Rhianna and Sarah and all the other well-dressed witches and wizards at Dymocks Brisbane. I’m looking forward to reading it!

Coming in August

A Darker Shade final for IreneOur book club book for July was be A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab, and we will be discussing it in mid-August. There’s still time to read it before we talk about it on the podcast! Please let us know what you thought.

In other news, I bought a house yesterday (hooraaaay!). My family and I will be moving at the end of August, so this month may be quiet around here while we start packing and so on. Exciting times!

I hope you had a great month of July, and happy reading!

I ended up completing 11 books in July, 2 via audio and the rest were print or ebooks. Here’s the list!

-The Girl with All the Gifts (audio)
-Dragonfly in Amber (audio, Book #2 in Outlander series) This literally took me 6mths to get through. A combo of slow story, vacations and not driving as much meant it just dragged on and on. I’ve been told that book 2 in this series can be a bit rough but to soldier on so that is what I plan to do but I’m moving away from audio.
    -Wanderlust by Roni Loren (FAVE!)
-The Crown’s Game by Evelyn Skye (2 Little Birds book club book!)
    -Sex Criminals: Volume 1
-Good Girl by Lauren Layne (FAVE!)
-The first 4 books in the ‘Sweet’ series by Maya Banks (super loved the first 3)
-Avery by Charlotte McConaghy (reread in anticipation of final book in series, absolutely LOVE this novel!)

    Bookish Goodness…
-Hosted a meet up of my Literature and Libations group end of July. After we all sat around drinking and talking about books for a bit we joined a Harry Potter block party up the street. Which was so fun!!! There was a little girl dressed as Dobby in a pillowcase who was beyond adorable. I wanted to give her a sock so bad! Skipped the Butterbeer and decided to get bookmarks made of us dressed as wizards and witches. Too fun!
-Somehow subscribed to ALL of the bookish subscription boxes known to man. I am very much enjoying Uppercase and Fandom of the Month club so far. Bookish swag is the best!

That’s about it for me in July. Have been through about 5 audiobooks I just wasn’t into at all so I’m hoping to find something super awesome to listen to soon!

Sounds like a great month of reading Tracy! I’ve heard the Outlander series improves a lot after book 2. And I have to say, your book group sounds like a lot of fun 😀 I have always wanted to get one of those subscription boxes – they always look awesome.

I’m really loving our Literature and Libations. We have such a good time with drinking and book talk and there is zero pressure or obligation other than to show up.

I will say, the subscription boxes get addictive for sure! I would like to find the perfect one of just book related goodies that aren’t all jewelry but haven’t done so yet. Getting a book is nice too, and the 2 I have gotten so far I am excited to read, but typically I don’t buy books that I haven’t already read unless they are from authors who are my favorite ever. But I’ve gotten some really fun stuff and then keep forgetting I’m subscribed.

So when I get a shipping confirmation for my next box, I feel like I need to wait to see what is in the box before deciding if I want to keep going. Box gets delivered, all of the happiness of ever happens and then I forget that I need to unsubscribe or not. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

By far, my favorite box isn’t book related but it is the Firefly box from Loot Crate. OMG. So much awesome Firefly swag and goodies. And because I got the first one, I have to get them all so I have all the little figurines and stuff. It is like a present for me all the time! Haha
